Why we started this company

Some houses cannot be sold the ordinary way.

Sometimes it is the house.

A kitchen from 1974. A foundation a buyer’s lender will look at once and decline. Water damage nobody wants photographed. Some houses cannot be shown at all — not to strangers, not on a Saturday, not in the state they are in.

Sometimes it is the person.

A parent has gone into care and the house has been shut since. Three siblings in three provinces. A separation where neither of you wants people walking through. A tenant who will not open the door. Nobody has the money, or the weekends, to get a house ready for photographs.

For any of those, let’s list it and see what happens is not an answer. It is months of holding costs and a conversation you have to keep having with people who are already tired.

So we stopped asking people to get a house ready for us. We come and look at it once, tell you what it is worth to us exactly as it stands, and put that in writing. Then the work is ours — the clearing out, the repairs, the months of it — and the house goes back on the market when it is ready.

You need it gone. The house needs work. That is the whole idea. It is why we are here and not on the listing side of it.

And if listing would leave you with more money, we say so. We only want the houses we are the right answer for.

Who we are

I'm Matthew Mai. I co-founded Direct Home Buyer.

You deal with us. We come and look at the house, we work out the number, and we sign.

After five years in real estate as a Realtor, Matthew had dealt with many situations where listing the home to the public simply wasn't feasible for the owners. So he teamed up with his partner and created Direct Home Buyer — to buy homes directly from homeowners, especially the ones in difficult circumstances who need the help most.

Matthew Mai is a licensed Realtor in Alberta at CIR Realty.

I'd rather you asked around before you called.

More than four hundred Calgary families since October 2021. CIR Realty placed me first in the company for 2024.

I mention it for one reason: it means there are people you can ask.

  • Ask my broker.
  • Ask me for names of people whose houses I've sold, and ring them.
  • Ask the Better Business Bureau. Direct Home Buyer is a BBB Accredited Business, rated A — the file is public.
